THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN DIGITAL DATA

LAYER SYSTEM
Please don’t be scared by the size of this document, a typical ELS survey has about 20 layers, is very easy to understand and allows use of AutoCAD's wildcard layer selection.

Simple names like ROAD, MANHOLE, FENCE or TREE were soon found to be too restrictive for us, our policy has always been to supply data compatible with our Clients system, as we have many clients and there are many CAD systems in use, we needed to devise a layering system that covered our own requirements and could be adapted and converted into a form suitable for any one of our clients.

We divided the layers into main headings and gave them a three character name (numbers were rejected as being too confusing) each main category was then sub divided to give greater detail

e.g. STRWAL - STR = Structural                  WAL = Wall

There is also some similarity amongst the secondary naming - most main categories have a TXT sub group, therefore all text can be controlled by switching the ???TXT layers.

In line with most conventions it is our normal practice to to draw with Linetype and Colour set to BYLAYER

Locate a Layer name by looking for Keywords in the Description in List 1

Locate the Description by browsing the Layer names  in List 2

PLOTTING
We only use two pens, Thick and Thin, ( 0.25 & 0.35 mm or thereabouts) All objects in Colour 6 (Magenta) should be set to use the Thick pen.    All other colours should be plotted in the thin pen.

UNITS
The Standard Units used by default is METRES, (One drawing unit = 1 metre)

See the FAQ page for further discussion on this subject.
